Try it nowThe new tax regime is the default option. Budget 2026 left the slab structure unchanged, and the Income Tax Act, 2025 took effect from 1 April 2026, replacing the 1961 Act. The table below shows the rates that apply to individual taxpayers this year.
| Taxable income | Rate | Tax on this slab |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ₹4,00,000 | Nil | ₹0 |
| ₹4,00,001 to ₹8,00,000 | 5% | Up to ₹20,000 |
| ₹8,00,001 to ₹12,00,000 | 10% | Up to ₹40,000 |
| ₹12,00,001 to ₹16,00,000 | 15% | Up to ₹60,000 |
| ₹16,00,001 to ₹20,00,000 | 20% | Up to ₹80,000 |
| ₹20,00,001 to ₹24,00,000 | 25% | Up to ₹1,00,000 |
| Above ₹24,00,000 | 30% | On the balance |
| Taxable income | Below 60 | 60 to 80 | Above 80 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to ₹2,50,000 | Nil | Nil | Nil |
| ₹2,50,001 to ₹3,00,000 | 5% | Nil | Nil |
| ₹3,00,001 to ₹5,00,000 | 5% | 5% | Nil |
| ₹5,00,001 to ₹10,00,000 | 20% | 20% | 20% |
| Above ₹10,00,000 | 30% | 30% | 30% |
The old regime keeps deductions such as Section 80C up to ₹1,50,000, Section 80D for health insurance, HRA exemption, and home loan interest under Section 24(b) up to ₹2,00,000. Whether it beats the new regime depends entirely on how much you actually claim.
Not sure which regime suits you? The Income Tax Calculator computes both side by side and tells you which one leaves more money in your pocket.
A calculator is only as good as the assumptions you feed it. Here is how to get numbers you can actually plan around, tool by tool.
Enter the interest rate your lender quoted, not the headline rate in an advertisement. Processing fees, insurance bundled with the loan and documentation charges sit outside the EMI, so add them separately when comparing offers. A useful rule of thumb: keep total EMIs across all loans under about 40% of your take-home pay so you retain room for savings and emergencies.
Equity funds have historically returned roughly 11% to 14% annualised over long holding periods, but any single year can be sharply negative. Model a conservative case at 10% and an optimistic case at 14% rather than treating one figure as a promise. If your income grows each year, the step-up option shows how much difference a 10% annual increase in your SIP makes over a decade.
Most banks compound FD interest quarterly, which is why the effective yield sits slightly above the stated rate. Interest is fully taxable at your slab rate, so a 7% FD returns closer to 4.9% after tax if you are in the 30% bracket. Senior citizens usually get 0.25% to 0.75% more than the general rate.
Decide first whether your figure already includes GST. Adding 18% to ₹10,000 gives ₹11,800, but removing GST from ₹10,000 gives a base of about ₹8,475. For supplies within a state the tax splits equally into CGST and SGST; for interstate supplies the whole amount is IGST.
Compare both regimes with your real deduction figures. As a rough guide, the old regime tends to win once your total deductions and exemptions cross roughly ₹4,00,000 to ₹4,50,000. Below that, the lower slab rates plus the larger standard deduction usually make the new regime cheaper.

The EMI formula matches what banks use, so the monthly instalment should match your lender within a rupee or two. Lenders may round differently and will add processing fees and insurance separately.
